Unraveling The Legend: The 1968 Dodge Charger R/T

This 1968 Dodge Charger R/T is powered by a 440ci Magnum V8 paired with a three-speed automatic transmission and is finished in maroon over black vinyl upholstery. Equipment includes a black vinyl roof, Magnum 500–style 15″ wheels, front disc brakes, power steering, black R/T tail stripes, concealed headlights, front bucket seats, and Vintage Air climate control. The car was acquired by the seller in August 2022, and subsequent work reportedly involved fluid changes in addition to refurbishing the transmission, installing an MSD ignition system, and replacing the carburetor, fuel hoses and filter, and power-steering pump. This Charger is now offered with Mississippi registration in the seller’s name.

The car was finished from the factory in red (PP1) and was reportedly repainted maroon with a black vinyl top under previous ownership. Exterior details include chrome bumpers, concealed headlights, round side-marker lights, dual side mirrors, a polished fuel-filler cap, and dual exhaust outlets. The seller notes paint chips on the front valance and hood, and touch-up paint has been applied to a dent on the right-front fender.

Chrome Magnum 500–style 15″ wheels feature black accents and are mounted with 225/70 front and 275/60 rear BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, while a matching spare is located in the trunk. The car is equipped with power steering, and the seller notes that a front disc-brake conversion was installed under prior ownership. Work performed in August 2022 reportedly included replacing the power-steering pump and associated fluid.

The interior is said to have been refurbished under prior ownership and features front bucket seats and a rear bench reupholstered in black vinyl, which is complemented by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Charger R/T mats line the footwells, the center console houses a floor-mounted shifter, and a Vintage Air climate-control system is operated by a glovebox-mounted controller. Factory climate controls remain positioned above a Chrysler Solid State AM radio. The seller notes that the radio and speakers do not work, the driver’s window can be difficult to open, and the center-console lid does not close all the way.

The woodgrain steering wheel fronts a 150-mph speedometer and a tachometer along with auxiliary readouts for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows just over 600 miles, and approximately 100 miles were added under current ownership. The speedometer and the tachometer are inoperable, and true mileage is unknown.

The 440ci V8 is said to have been rebuilt under prior ownership and features Mopar-branded valve covers, an aluminum Champion radiator, and an MSD ignition system that was installed under current ownership. Additional work performed under current ownership reportedly involved fluid changes in August 2022 in addition to replacing the carburetor, various hose clamps, and the fuel hoses and filter.
