Shelter Dog Escapes And Shows Up At House Of Woman Who Fed Him Treats

Abbey Boyd had no way of knowing that her small act of kindness towards a shelter dog would end up leading to a “jail break” and a new friend for life.

The SPCA shelter kennel worker fed a newly-arrived dog some bacon strips and shortly after he escaped his kennel and tracked her miles across town to her home!

Abbey works at the Northwest Territories SCPA in Yellowknife, Canada. When Ted the German Shepherd/Akita mix arrived at the shelter he was very scared and refused to let anyone walk him.

Trying to make him feel better and less afraid, she gave the dog cheese-flavored bacon strips to win his affection. She left work later that day and headed home.

Abbey told CBC News that she went to her second job’s shift at around 3 a.m. in the morning and when she returned home a few hours later, there was a strange dog on her porch barking at her.

She was a “bit wary” of the dog, but when she got closer she recognized it was Ted! She couldn’t believe it. Somehow Ted had trekked 3.5 miles (5.5 km) across town to her home.

“It doesn’t really make sense, how he would have chosen or found me out of all the smells,” said Abbey. But Abbey took it as a sign that Ted had picked her as his human.

“I can’t ignore a sign like that. He showed up at my house, out of how many people [that] live here? All the dogs. All the smells. He chose my house. Where I am.”

It seems Ted’s determination that the two should be together worked its magic on Abbey and she said that she’s adopting Ted.
