The dog’s heart wrenching howls are what first caught the attention of Dylan Coqit at the shoreline of Wood Lake in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley in Canada. Dylan was at his lakeside home when he heard the desperate cries for help and noticed a dog was stranded after falling through the ice.
“It’s crying the entire time, like shrieking,” Cocqit said. “It was hard to hear that poor puppy crying.”
Dylan decided to try and help save the dog. He grabbed a weight and ran outside in his pajamas and tried to break a path through the ice.
But his neighbor, Bill Varner, noticed and grew worried for the young man. “That was my first thought when I saw him,” Varner told CTV News. “I thought, ‘Oh my God. If he’s going to go out there, he might not make it.’”
Varner looked around for a safer alternative and spotted a fiberglass canoe at a neighbor’s home. The two men grabbed the canoe and paddled out to the dog. Varner was able to rock up and down in the canoe and break the ice as Dylan steered the canoe alongside of the dog.
They were able to make their way to the border collie just in time before the dog submerged in exhaustion.
Dylan called the dog’s owner who was overjoyed that he had saved her dog. For Dylan, he’s glad he was in the right place at the right time.
