A disabled dog named Ping Pong is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a baby buried alive by his 15-year-old mother. The three-legged dog was noticed by villagers in Ban Nong Kham village, north east of Bangkok, Thailand when he was seen digging and sniffing in the dirt.
According to Ping Pong’s owner, Usa Nisaika, Ping Pong dug the ground and exposed the baby’s legs. He heard his dog barking and a baby crying and when he went to check he saw the baby’s legs and he and other locals immediately rescued the baby, who is said to be doing fine.
Authorities investigated and learned the baby belonged to a teenage girl who was scared of being punished by her father for getting pregnant. Local news channels indicated that the authorities were required to charge her with attempted murder, but that she is currently undergoing psychological assessment and is in the care of social workers. The girl’s family have said they will take care of the baby.
Lieutenant colonel Panuwat Puttakam, of Cham Phuang police said, “The girl is now in the care of a psychologist and her parents because she is in great fear. She regrets what she did and said she acted on impulse without thinking it through. She feared her parents would find out she had been pregnant.”
As for Ping Pong, Usa has nothing but praise for the dog he raised from a puppy.
“Ping Pong was hit by a car, so he’s disabled. But I kept him because he’s so loyal and obedient, and always helps me out when I go into the fields to tend to my cattle,” Usa told Khaosod News. “He’s loved by the entire village. It’s amazing he found the baby.”
