After 372 days at the shelter dog rescued from euthanasia is adopted

Major is now hitting the road with his new owner

For an animal shelter, there’s nothing better than the moment a pet gets adopted, especially if they have been with them for a long time. When that day finally came for a dog named Major, who spent a year in a shelter after being rescued from being put down, it was a true moment for celebration.

According to ABC Chicago, Major and his brother Hilo were rescued from animal control in Quincy, Illinois. They were reportedly in danger of being euthanized, but were thankfully rescued by the Naperville Area Humane Society.

But after being taken in by the shelter, both dogs struggled to find homes. A year passed, and no one was interested in adopting. The humane society described Major as playful, energetic, and treat-motivated, though said he shouldn’t be in a home with young children, cats or other dogs.

Despite the odds against him, the shelter hoped there was a home for Major out there somewhere. They even named a holiday, “Major’s Day,” after him, using it as an occasion to spotlight their longtime shelter dogs in need of homes.

But recently, 372 after Major entered the shelter, the Naperville Area Humane Society reported great news: Major had been adopted! Video shows the shelter staff lining up outside to say goodbye to Major, and the sweet dog says farewell to each of them.

The video ends with Major leaving the shelter with his new owner, who is reportedly a semi-truck driver. Major hops in the truck, the beginning of a new adventure that will take him all over the country.

NAHS wrote that they “couldn’t be more excited to celebrate another long term resident walking out the doors.”

“We can’t wait to see where the road will be taking you Major.”

We’re so glad Major has been adopted! We hope he has a great life traveling around the country with his new owner
