John Cassabria says he was in the right place at the right time to save a life. The Amazon delivery driver was out on his route in Woburn, Boston earlier this summer when he spotted a dog’s snout sticking out of a backyard pool. He instantly knew the dog was in a whole lot of trouble.
The senior husky was desperately trying to stay afloat, which prompted Cassabria into action. Cassabria told WBZ-TV, “I saw what looked like a snout and at that moment my heart sank.”
Without a second thought, Cassabria jumped over the fence and into the water; he didn’t take a moment to take off his clothes or empty his pockets of his phone or wallet as “none of that mattered.”
All that mattered to Cassabria was getting to the dog as fast as possible. Thankfully, he was able to pull the 14-year-old dog named Luka from the water in time.
Cassabria stayed with the dog until the scheduled sitter arrived an hour later. It’s thought that a bone caught in the pool’s vacuum cord may have been what enticed Luka into the pool. Luka’s family was only a few hours into their vacation when Animal Control called to give them the news.
Julie Caldwell, Luka’s owner, said she is beyond grateful for Cassabria’s heroic actions. Luka has issues with his hind legs and she doesn’t let Luka swim in the pool because of his mobility issues, People magazine reported.
Caldwell later wrote a letter to Amazon, writing: “Words cannot express how grateful we are to him. In fact I have tears in my eyes as I write this email. Luka is doing fine thanks to your wonderful and courageous employee.”
But Cassabria remains humble about what he did. “I happened to be in the right moment at the right time,” he said. “I would repeat the same actions over and over if I had to.”
