Unveiling the Legend: 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 Fastback

This 1969 Shelby Mustang GT500 fastback was initially delivered to Joe Myers Ford located in Houston, Texas. It boasts a Gulfstream Aqua exterior with gold stripes, complementing the interior adorned in black upholstery. Under the hood, it’s equipped with a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 engine coupled to a three-speed C6 automatic transmission. Notable features include 15″ wheels, power steering, power-assisted front disc brakes, Lucas driving lights, a Sport Deck rear seat, air conditioning, a tilt-away steering wheel, and a push-button AM radio.

The current owner acquired this vehicle in 2022. Subsequent maintenance endeavors encompassed servicing the air conditioning system, rebuilding the carburetor, and substituting components like the fan clutch, glovebox, instrument panel circuit and turn signal boards, pedal pads, interior lights, gauge lenses, and tires. Accompanying the car are a reproduction window sticker, owner’s manual, dealer letter, Shelby order invoice, build sheets, Deluxe Marti report, wiring diagram book, and a clean California title, all held in the seller’s name.

The car left the factory finished in Gulfstream Aqua (F5) with gold side stripes and is said to have been repainted under prior ownership. Exterior details include an integrated rear spoiler, a left quarter-panel antenna, Lucas driving lights, chrome bumpers, quarter-panel scoops, body-color sport mirrors, center-exit dual exhaust outlets, and a vented hood with NACA ducts.

Five-spoke 15″ wheels with polished lips wear black Shelby center caps and are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 235/60 up front and 245/60 out back that were reportedly mounted in 2023. A space-saver spare and jack are mounted in the trunk. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The cabin features high-back front bucket seats and a rear bench seat upholstered in black vinyl joined by color-coordinated door panels. Additional equipment includes air conditioning, a roll bar, a padded center armrest, faux teak wood trim, GT500-branded floormats, and shoulder belts for the front occupants. The car retains R12 refrigerant in the air conditioning system, which is said to have been serviced in 2023.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel is mounted to a tilt-away column and frames a 140-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and supplementary gauges. An oil pressure gauge and ammeter are affixed to the center console. Work in 2023 is said to consist of replacing the glovebox, turn signal switch, instrument panel circuit and turn signal boards, pedal pads, interior lights, and gauge lenses. The five-digit mechanical odometer shows 4k miles, approximately 700 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 428ci Cobra Jet V8 features a four-barrel carburetor, finned valve covers, and a blue-finished Ram-Air filter housing, engine block, intake manifold, and cylinder heads. The carburetor was reportedly rebuilt and tuned under current ownership and an oil change was performed.

Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a C6 three-speed automatic transmission and a 9″ rear axle with 3.00:1 gearing.

The Deluxe Marti report lists factory colors, equipment, and a production date of February 27, 1969. A copy of the initial purchase paperwork, a reproduction Warranty Number tag, dealer invoice, Shelby order sheet, and build sheets are included in the sale.
