They weren’t going to be adopted without the other, or at least that’s what Alaina Brinton instantly recognized when she went to her local shelter to adopt a dog.
On her fateful visit to an animal shelter seven years ago she had planned on adopting one dog, but ended up taking home two.
“Seven years ago I went to adopt this hound and they told me this overgrown puppy had bonded to her. So I adopted them both! They’re getting old now but they are still two peas in a pod,” Alaina shared on reddit. “Here they are on their first car ride all those years ago.”
The two dogs came to Alaina’s attention after she had lost her senior dog and was looking for a new one. That’s when she saw a picture of Lucy, a red coonhound mix. Lucy had arrived at the shelter as a stray.
“I saw a picture of Lucy at my local humane society and just had to meet her,” Alaina told The Dodo. “When I called, they said that she’d been fostered with another dog and they’d like for me to also meet her buddy. I figured there wouldn’t be any harm in seeing both.”
The other dog was Sully, a puppy who had been adopted and returned to the shelter. When Lucy met Sully she became a surrogate mother to Sully.
“I fell in love right away,” Alaina said. “Besides, it was obvious Sully was looking to Lucy to show him what things were or weren’t okay, and I wouldn’t have had the heart to split them up.”
It turned out to be the right decision, as both dogs heavily relied on each other as they settled in to their new home.
To this day, the two dogs are still best friends and still look out for each other.
For example, Alaina says when they’re playing in the dog park if Sully strays to far away, he’ll be sure to check on Lucy every few minutes.
The two really are bonded for life. Said Alaina, “Anytime they’re settling in together, Lucy will give Sully a couple of licks on his forehead and he just looks like he’s so pleased.”
