Heroic Dog Spots Baby Deer Drowning And Jumps Into Harbor To Save Her Life

A dog became an unlikely animal rescuer when he came to rescue of a baby deer drowning in Port Jefferson Harbor in New York. Storm the Golden retriever was out for a walk with Mark Freeley and his partner Erica Kutzing when he spotted the fawn in the water. The dog immediately jumped into the water and swam out to the baby deer and grabbed her by the scruff of her neck.

Mark Freeley wrote, “What a morning…can’t believe this…Storm just saved this baby deer from PJ Harbor” and shared a video of his heroic dog.

The moment Freeley turned off his camera he contacted Strong Island Animal Rescue League for help. But as soon as rescue volunteer Frankie Floridia arrived, the disoriented fawn got into trouble a second time, stumbling back into the water.

“Erica called Frankie for an update while driving and his panic-stricken voice yelled out, ‘She’s back in the water! She’s too far out! She’s drowning! I’m going in!’” the rescue group wrote on Facebook. “Frankie hung up the phone.”

Frankie swam out into the water to save the baby deer and when he got to shore they noticed the fawn had an eye injury, covered in ticks and stressed from her near drowning so they loaded her in the car and drove them to local local wildlife rehabilitator STAR Foundation. They say that the fawn has a good chance of recovering.

Although it’s not clear where the mother deer was, or how the fawn got into the water in the first place, it’s thanks to the collaboration between Storm, Mark, Erica and Frankie that the fawn has survived.

“It was an amazing group effort today,” the Strong Island Animal Rescue League wrote. “Thank you Mark, Storm, Frankie, Erica and everyone at STAR who all played an amazing part in saving a life today.”
