Firefighters Scramble To Save Dog After He Falls Into Icy River

The dog was clinging onto the ice for dear life. Fortunately, firefighters were called in time to come to his rescue.

The Swift Current Fire Department raced to the aid of the dog, who fell through the ice after the dog’s owner had allowed the dog off-leash near a creek in the town several hundred miles southwest of Regina, Saskatchewan.

One of the Saskatchewan firefighters donned special gear to crawl across the ice to get to the dog. Two other firefighters stayed on land and held onto the rope as he ventured onto the ice.

It’s a precarious moment when he finally reaches the dog, as it looks like he might fall into the water with the dog. But, thankfully, he’s able to recover and drags the dog out.

After the dog is safely back on dry land, he hobbles up the hill to reach his owners, right past the firefighters trying to put a warm blanket on him.

Fire chief Denis Pilon warned other dog owners after the rescue for residents to keep their pets and their families off the ice.

“Quick action calling the fire department helped save their pet,” wrote Pilon. “Please keep your pets and children away from the creek. The ice is thin and it is not safe.”

It’s a safety reminder worth sharing for anyone venturing outdoors with their family in winter weather.
